Hello and welcome to my website!
I am Jahmi Roc — a Los Angeles-based, Kingston-born reggae fusion artist. This post is going live one week before my very first EP is out on all streaming platforms, and I am so excited to share my art with the world.
I have been singing since I was young. I started recording music for myself in 2021. My main goal at the time was to heal from a very traumatic breakup. Love Like Liberation — five years later — is a testimony of everything I have been through since then.
I am so honoured to have worked with Dale "Dizzle" Virgo on this project. Together we moved through various styles while still anchoring the sound in reggae. Even though I have been making music since 2021, my experience with Dale is the first time I have been able to work with a producer who is deeply versed in Jamaican popular music forms. It feels like a return home.
Earlier today I had a two-hour rehearsal for my upcoming performance at Poom Poom Tuesdays on July 14th. I was in the studio with Empress Truth Akins and Oriana, our choreographer, working through our short set. It felt so good to be in that dance studio, moving to my own music, knowing the EP is almost here.
I am looking forward to celebrating with my friends and collaborators at a private event next week as we mark the release together.
When I think about this EP — Love Like Liberation — it is about how people can love themselves into freedom. That is my mission. My objective is to help people move through love in a way that leads to liberation. For me, liberation is self-determination: the ability to live life on your own terms.
In this world there are many structures that work against us — especially as a Jamaican Black woman living in the United States. There are many isms and schisms that operate structurally. And yet I am abundantly blessed. I walk in prosperity. I walk in abundance — because of my mindset, and because of who I choose to surround myself with.
This is a celebration, and I am so happy you are here reading this.
