Release Week, Part Two: Reclaiming Ourselves — A Jottings Conversation
Hello again, and welcome back to The Roc Journal.
We are still in release week, and I want to keep taking you with me through the moments that made Love Like Liberation feel alive before it ever reached the streaming platforms.
On Monday, July 13th — just days before the drop — I recorded Season 3, Episode 12 of my podcast, Jahmi Roc's Jottings, titled Love Like Liberation: Reclaiming Ourselves Through Music and Dance. This one was special, because I was in conversation with my co-hosts: Nikkita "NuclearBlackness," DJ Papalotl, and our new co-host, Reggae Moms.
The theme of the episode — liberation through music and dance — was actually sparked by a deep-dive question from Nikkita. And it opened up such a beautiful conversation about acceptance, releasing shame, and the way music and dance move us toward freedom.
I got to plug my debut EP, Love Like Liberation, dropping that Friday, and share my excitement about the leading track, Sweet Like Mango — a song about a liberating kind of love. We talked about how sound and movement help us come home to ourselves.
Reggae Moms brought such light to the room. She called dance her happy place — a form of freedom — and spoke about the importance of free movement and body expression without judgment. She shared how she holds space on the dance floor so others can feel free to move too. That connection between dance, music, and personal liberation is exactly what this project is about.
For me, this episode captured the heart of Love Like Liberation in real time — days before release, in community, in conversation, in the spirit of reclaiming.
